After Kyle Walker’s rather disappointing cameo in the Coppa Italia final, news has emerged regarding his future.

As a reminder, Walker arrived at Milan during the winter transfer window on loan from Manchester City, with an option to buy that is set at €5m as per multiple reports. The idea is he would bring leadership, a winning mentality and versatility, given he can play as a full-back and a centre-back.

However, it hasn’t gone completely to plan for the Englishman. He struggled with a fractured elbow which kept him out for a crucial stretch, then the switch to a three-man defence has seen Alex Jimenez take the right wing-back spot.

Milan must decide on the buy-out option and Matteo Moretto – a journalist at Relevo – spoke on Fabrizio Romano’s YouTube channel about what the latest is on Walker. MilanNews relayed the comments.

“After the defeat in the Coppa Italia final, we will have to start planning the future in a concrete way. The non-confirmation of Conceiçao and that of Joao Felix are two non-news. Milan already in March were not convinced about continuing with the Portuguese coach also in view of next season.

“The feeling never blossomed, the club’s line has never changed. Conceiçao will say goodbye at the end of the season, but it is a non-news like the non-confirmation of Joao Felix because he will return to Chelsea after the loan.

“On March 30, when it was still believed that Walker would almost certainly remain at Milan, I told you that the Rossoneri were reflecting on the full-back’s future, because already at the end of March Milan was not fully convinced about continuing with Walker also in view of next season.

“At that time Milan were making some considerations related to both performance but also age and the salary that Walker would receive if Milan were to redeem him. From next year he would receive 4.5 million euros net per season.

“A sizeable salary, Milan has started to ask themselves some questions. To this figure are added the commissions: if Milan were to buy Walker, they would have to pay the commissions to the Englishman’s agents.

“Already at the end of March this orientation, that of redeeming him, was not the prevailing one in the minds of the Rossoneri. Today I can confirm that Milan is increasingly towards the no to the redemption, Walker is expected to return to Manchester City at the end of the season.

“A 100% decision has not been made yet because this will be discussed between next week and the week after, but Milan’s orientation is not to keep Walker due to the same doubts that existed at the end of May: age, salary and performance on the pitch.”
