15 July 2018, 2018 FIFA World Cup, Final: France 4-2 (2-1) Croatia

"The most important shirt of my life is the one from the 2018 World Cup final. For a small country like Croatia, it was unbelievable that we had the chance to win the title and the most beautiful trophy in football. I was of course nervous before the match, but when I went out onto the pitch, I was completely focused. I will never forget the scenes before and after the match. After that occasion I didn't want to swap shirts with anyone; that game was too special for that. I kept the shirt for myself and my family. Even though we lost the World Cup final, I'm proud of our performance; but the way the game panned out was a bit unfortunate. Nonetheless, our arrival in Croatia after the match will remain the best moment of my career, perhaps even of my life. A million people were waiting for us there, we needed eight hours to travel the 10 kilometres from the airport to the city centre. Many people were just so happy that we had made it so far; it moved me to tears. I can still hardly find the words to describe it almost seven years later.

Otherwise, I like to swap shirts very often after matches. But sometimes the shirts come to me in a roundabout way. For example, I also have shirts belonging to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Almost all of us got a shirt from Messi in 2018, because our victory against Iceland was what made it possible for Argentina to progress to the round of 16. (laughs) He promised Ivan Rakitić back then that we'd all get a shirt with his signature if we beat Iceland. Luka Modrić organised Ronaldo's shirt for me when he played alongside him at Real Madrid.

Three shirts from my time at TSG have a special meaning for me: the one from the match against Dortmund when we reached the Champions League, the one from the BVB game in which I scored four goals and we made it into the Europa League, and the one I wore on the last matchday of last season against Bayern when I scored three goals."
