Charlton Athletic boss Nathan Jones has revealed that Chuks Aneke missed the win at Crawley on Tuesday night as a precaution, with the striker set to be involved against Wigan this weekend.

The Addicks made it nine wins in their last 12 League One games after a Thierry Small goal was enough at Broadfield Stadium.

The result saw Charlton move up to fourth in the table, and whilst they still have work to do to secure a play-off place, the Londoners will also have an eye on second-place, as they trail Wycombe Wanderers by just five points.

Chuks Aneke absence against Crawley explained

So, it’s an exciting time to be a Charlton fan, although it wasn’t all good news on Tuesday, as Josh Edwards was forced off with a slight groin issue.

As well as that, Aneke wasn’t involved, which came as a surprise, as the striker has been used regularly from the bench this season.

However, speaking to South London Press, Jones explained that it wasn’t an injury problem that kept the 31-year-old, who should be involved when the Latics arrive at The Valley on Saturday.

We don’t take chances. Chuks was fine after the (Stockport) game, no problem. We wanted to use the squad and to have Chuks available for the weekend. We probably didn’t want to expose him tonight.

It’s about using the squad. We’ve got to keep everyone fit and everyone right. We’ve left Bezza (Luke Berry) out tonight and put (Alex) Gilbert in because he has looked a little bit jaded in recent weeks. It is about using and trusting your squad.”

Nathan Jones knows what’s required for Charlton to be successful

Charlton have real momentum right now, and, in Jones, they have a manager who has been there and done it at this level in the past.

So, he is aware of the demands of League One, and he will rotate the squad when necessary, and he is certainly right to not risk Aneke at this stage of the campaign, with so many big games to come.

It’s a relief for Charlton that there’s no fresh issue for the player, and even if he hasn’t been the most prolific this season, he has a role to play from the bench.
