Charlton Athletic youngster Thierry Small is set to be out of contract during the summer, which has alerted Championship clubs.

The 20-year-old has been a key player for the Addicks under Nathan Jones this season, providing a valuable outlet on the right-hand side of the pitch despite naturally being a left-sided defender.

The former Everton and Southampton man has shown real promise in his new role, with his speed and trickery enabling him to take the ball past defenders at will, and if he manages to refine his end product, there is no doubt that he will be able to thrive at a higher level.

Therefore, it is no surprise that he is attracting interest from Millwall and Preston North End, with both clubs said to be keen on completing a deal for him when his contract comes to an end this summer.

Charlton offered a new long-term contract to Small in April last year, but he is yet to agree fresh terms at The Valley, so the Addicks have some convincing to do if they are going to keep him in SE7 beyond this season.

Jones may need to plan for life without Small this summer, so with that in mind, let's take a look at three players who Charlton could consider bringing in as a replacement.

Lasse Sorensen

Huddersfield Town wing-back Lasse Sorensen has not enjoyed the debut season he would have hoped for in West Yorkshire, with just three assists to his name and the Terriers looking likely to miss out on a play-off place.

The 25-year-old arrived with a good reputation following a successful spell at Lincoln City last season, where he netted four goals and provided eight assists in League One, but he has not quite managed to replicate that form consistently for Huddersfield.

Charlton should know what Sorensen is capable of after he stood out against them during their 3-1 defeat away at Lincoln last term, and he could be seen as an adequate replacement for Small on the right-hand side given his ability to make an impact at both ends of the pitch.

Huddersfield reportedly paid a fee worth up to £500,000 to sign Sorensen on a three-year contract last year, but if they decide they want to re-shape their squad this summer following an underwhelming season, then the Dane might potentially be someone Charlton could consider making a move for.

Femi Seriki

Sheffield United wing-back Femi Seriki has impressed occasionally in the Championship for the Blades this season, but he is a player who could potentially be available this summer, especially if Chris Wilder's side win promotion back to the Premier League.

Charlton would realistically only stand any chance of signing the 22-year-old if they won promotion to the Championship, but if Small leaves the club regardless of which division they are in, then the Addicks will need to find a suitable replacement.

Queens Park Rangers made a late move to sign Seriki on the final day of the January transfer window, but he stayed put at Bramall Lane, where he has started just seven league games so far this season.

There is no doubt that Seriki would be an ambitious target for Charlton, but his athleticism and willingness to get up and down the pitch would make him suitable for Jones' system, and the allure of regular first-team football in the second tier may be something that could tempt the defender if the Addicks did win promotion.

Mallik Wilks

If Charlton fail to win promotion from League One this season, there is every chance that Jones looks for someone who is more naturally attack-minded to replace Small on the right-hand side, especially if Kayne Ramsay stays at the club and can provide reliable defensive cover at right-back.

Sheffield Wednesday winger Mallik Wilks has impressed on loan at Rotherham United in League One this season, and he was linked with a move to Charlton last summer, so he could be a shrewd signing for the Addicks this time around.

Wilks has shown that he is more than capable of impressing in the third tier during spells at Doncaster Rovers, Hull City, and now Rotherham, while his attacking output could make him a better option than Small in League One fixtures where Charlton require a less defensive approach.

Charlton would definitely love to keep hold of Small long-term given his current ability and his undoubted potential, but if the 20-year-old does leave the club at the end of his contract this summer, Charlton will have an opportunity to make a statement signing to replace him on the right-wing, and these three players should be considered by Jones.
