Celtic suffered a heartbreak in the Champions League after they drew 1-1 against Bayern Munich away from home in the second leg of the qualifier.
The Bhoys produced an outstanding performance in Munich and deservedly took the lead through Nicolas Kuhn, who capitalised on Kim Min-jae’s error.
However, a 94th-min equaliser from Bayern denied Celtic a stunning victory in a gut-wrenching fashion. Alphonso Davies’s late goal means Bayern didn’t need the extra time as they progressed to the next round on a 3-2 aggregate.
The likes of Kuhn, Callum McGregor, and Daizen Maeda all came very close to scoring, and the result could have easily been different.
In the end, one cannot help but feel for the Celtic players who looked dejected after such a heroic display. While Bayern breathed a sigh of relief, Brendan Rodgers feels that his side has earned Champions League credibility with that performance.
There were some terrific performances from the Hoops players, but one of them who really made a huge impact was right-back Alistair Johnston.
The Daily Mail hailed him as “outstanding” and gave him a 9/10 rating.
They wrote: “Some brilliant last-ditch defending. Fierce in the tackle and was at his tenacious best. Outstanding performance. Man of the match.”
The likes of Kasper Schmeichel, Reo Hatate, Maeda, McGregor, and Kuhn were terrific on the night, but Johnston caught the attention with his tackles and energy.
The 26-year-old full-back made seven clearances, two interceptions, three tackles, and blocked two efforts to complete a magnificent defensive performance.
Celtic fans should be proud of the fight every player showed over the course of 180 minutes, and it gave the feeling that they are now ready to face big giants in this competition.
They just needed a bit of composure in front of goal. Although they were beaten, the Bhoys will return to Glasgow with their heads held high.
