Rangers secured their first victory at Parkhead since 2020 after beating Celtic 3-2 on Sunday, and Neil Lennon has shared his views on whether Barry Ferguson should get a permanent job at Ibrox.
The Gers appointed their former club skipper on an interim basis following the sacking of Philippe Clement, and so far, he has done a remarkable job.
Ferguson guided Rangers to the last eight of the Europa League after knocking Fenerbahce out. And a few days later, he became the first Rangers boss to win his first match at Celtic Park since Walter Smith in 1991. It’s an incredible achievement.
However, the big question now remains — will the 49ers consider Ferguson for the permanent job at Ibrox? Lennon thinks Ferguson has definitely positioned himself for the Rangers job.
The Celtic boss said: “Why not? He’s delivering. They knocked Fenerbahce over two legs, which is no mean feat.
“They come to Celtic Park today, where Celtic are imperious, and they lost only to Bayern Munich all season. I think he’s positioning himself in the right area to be looked at.”
The Gers played with passion and intensity and took a 2-0 lead at the break, with goals coming from Nico Raskin and Mohamed Diomande.
Celtic levelled the tie in the second half through Reo Hatate and Daizen Maeda. But a late strike from Hamza Igamane sealed all three points for Rangers.
Ferguson has instilled pride and passion amongst players about what it means to play for this club, something his predecessors have failed to do. The players gave everything on the pitch, and he should be proud with the effort.
Rangers have struggled badly with appointing managers in recent years, and therefore, the 49ers must make the right choices in the summer.
If Ferguson can take Rangers further in the Europa League, then he definitely deserves one fair chance to manage the club permanently.
