Celtic defender Cameron Carter-Vickers has come under criticism from pundits after his unimpressive performance in Sunday’s 3-2 loss against Rangers at Parkhead in the Scottish Premiership.
The Bhoys were below par in the first half and went 2-0 down at the break. They fought back strongly in the second half to make it 2-2, with goals coming from Daizen Maeda and Reo Hatate.
However, an error in judgment from Carter-Vickers allowed Hamza Igamane to have a crack at goal from 20 yards out, two minutes from normal time, and it went in.
Carter-Vickers rose to win the header along with Igamane to clear the ball from Jack Butland’s goal kick, but the 27-year-old completely missed the ball.
Alistair Johnston then slipped to allow Igamane to drive towards the box and finish with great power. While it was a “phenomenal” strike, there was a degree of luck involved to get the ball under control.
Chris Sutton, while commentating on the game, suggested that Carter-Vickers ducked out of the header.
Sutton’s old Celtic pal Neil Lennon also questioned Carter-Vicker’s role, and he was left puzzled as to why the USA defender didn’t go for the header.
Lennon said: “It should never have got that far. Carter-Vickers misses the header completely.
“I don’t care if he gets a shout or not, just head it. I’m not convinced he got a shout. For whatever reason Cameron has misjudged it.”
Celtic have lost for the first time at home this season in the league. They also lost at Celtic Park against Rangers for the first time since 2020.
The Bhoys lost twice against Rangers this season, but they are still running away with the SPFL title. They lead the table by 13 points, with eight games remaining.
The Daily Record has given Carter-Vickers a 5/10 rating for his performance against Rangers. The newspaper wrote that the defender looked sluggish on the ball.
