Nemanja Matić (36) was happy to keep the recently erupted feud between him and Manchester United’s André Onana (29) alive after the goalkeeper made two costly errors in the 2-2 draw with Olympique Lyonnais.
The two had a back-and-forth spat in the hours leading up to the first leg of the Europa League quarter-final after the Serbian international took exception to Onana’s comment that United were “way better” than their French opposition.
Matić did not hold back his tongue in the press conference and told Onana, “When you are one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United’s history, you need to take care of what you’re talking about… He should focus on his own performance before speaking about others.”
Onana quickly fired back via his social media, “At least I’ve lifted trophies with the greatest club in the world. Some can’t say the same.” It was an obvious dig towards Matić’s trophyless stay in Manchester, albeit the midfielder has won the Premier League three times with Chelsea.
Despite being an unused substitute, it would be Matić who would get the last laugh on the night as Onana had a game to forget. The goalkeeper made mistakes in both of the goals, fumbling Thiago Almada’s free kick in the 25th minute and pushing a shot into the path of Rayan Cherki in the 95th to concede a last-minute equaliser.
After the game, Matić took to his Instagram to upload a subtle dig towards Onana. The midfielder posted a picture on his story of the United shirts he collected from the evening, including that of his former teammate and substitute goalkeeper Tom Heaton.
