Heading into the Copa do Brasil, Domènec Torrent’s Flamengo side had not lost a match since 17 September and goalkeeper Hugo Souza’s performance helped extend the record.
At just 21-years-old, Neneca (as he is more commonly known) was the rock of the team in their 0-1 victory over Athletico-PR in the first leg of the Round of 16.
He made three strong saves and saved a penalty in the 77 minute to stop the hosts from tying the match.
With many injuries and COVID-19 positive players, the youngster went from being the fourth choice goalkeeper right into the starting lineup. Since taking over, Flamengo have yet to lose a match in 12 games.
His performances, much like on Wednesday night, have not gone unnoticed. Journalist Renato Maurício Prado said the youngster is the best goalkeeper since Júlio César.
“In the 44 years of my career, I confess, I have never seen a goalkeeper with the potential of Hugo Souza. Not even Júlio César appeared in such an impactful way,” read Prado’s blog.
After the match, Torrent acknowledged the Brazilian’s strong performances but noted that the competition to earn the starting spot is ramping up again.
“We are lucky to have four goalkeepers who, when needed, are excellent. Hugo is playing well, but he has to know that Diego (Alves) is returning to training. We already talked to them. The most important thing is to be focused on the next game.”
With three clean sheets in 10 matches, Souza has ensured his name is being considered.
