Inter Milan wingback Denzel Dumfries is reportedly on the cusp of penning a contract extension, thus putting an end to a year-long saga.

The 28-year-old has been a pillar in Simone Inzaghi’s plans since joining the club in the summer of 2021.

The former PSV Eindhoven star reportedly had interest from the likes of Manchester United and Aston Villa during the summer. However, a departure never materialized.

Instead, the player’s agents finally found a breakthrough in their negotiations with the Nerazzurri management.

The two parties have an agreement in principle over a new deal that runs until June 2027. This would prevent the player’s free exit at the end of the season.

While Dumfries has been holding out for larger figures, he and his entourage have eventually accepted Inter’s €4-million-per-season proposal. The wingback currently earns 2.5 million euros per year.

According to Il Corriere dello Sport via FcInterNews, the Netherlands international is only one step away from signing his new Inter contract.

The Roman newspaper reveals that the parties have been in constant contact over the past few weeks. The feeling is that the finish line is just around the corner.

Moreover, the source reveals that the agents have also agreed not to include a release clause in the contract.

The Dutchman’s camp had been pushing for the insertion of a relatively low buyout clause. However, the Italian champions stuck to their guns, rejecting the ideal altogether.

La Gazzetta dello Sport and Tuttosport also weigh in on this particular detail.

Therefore, the official announcement could arrive sooner rather than later. The two parties are currently ironing out the final details in their agreement.
