Union St Gilloise kicked off their 2023/2024 season with a convincing 2-0 win over their city rivals Anderlecht. Denis Eckert struck with half an hour gone to score the first goal of the new Belgian season. The 26-year-old German striker finished off a long ball that was put on a plate for him by Madagascan international Loïc Lapoussin.

In response, Anderlecht were only able to muster two shots on target, both of which were saved by new Union captain Anthony Moris. The 33-year-old Luxembourg international denied Anderlecht’s new striker Kasper Dolberg from close range. The Danish forward only managed to have two shots on goal and looked a player who could do with finding the net early this season to regain some confidence.

Union were given the chance to see the game out late on when Jan Vertonghen was adjudged to have committed a hand ball inside the box, although it did look harsh. With regular penalty taker from seasons past Teddy Teuma now gone, the responsibility fell to Cameron Puertas. The Swiss midfielder made no mistake from the spot to make it 2-0 and keep up Union’s unbeaten run against Anderlecht over the past few seasons.
