We asked Davey Hat-Trick to give us his match ratings and player comments after Newcastle 1 Manchester City 1.

That was far more like it.

Newcastle rediscovered the passion and commitment that had been absent for spells this season.

The only way you get anything out of Man City is to work your socks off for 90 minutes and have a right go at them. Even then, they are good enough to beat just about every team in the world, but we kept Haaland quiet, matched their midfield, and kept their defence on their toes.

We looked like a team that belonged at their level and Man City can have no complaints about the result. We deserved our point.

Tactically, Eddie and the boys got things right. Didn’t allow Man City many clear-cut chances, but that doesn’t mean they parked the bus, far from it.

There were good performances all over the park and four of our players cramped up before the end of the game. That tells you everything you need to know about the effort the lads put in. I can’t see too many of the starting XI being asked to do 90 minutes against Wimbledon and that is fine by me.

Nick Pope-  8

Gave us a couple of nervy moments with his passing – his distribution seems to be getting worse, if anything – but redeemed himself with a couple of top drawer saves and some brave interceptions.

He’s a calm, commanding and confident goalkeeper, and those characteristics are, I’m sure, greatly appreciated by his defensive colleagues

Kieran Tripper – 7

It was absolutely the right decision to start him ahead of Tino in this game, in my opinion.

There is no hiding from the fact that Grealish did him for Man City’s goal, and Tripps will be mad about that, but he was otherwise excellent. I do think he has a calming effect on those around him

Fabian Schar – 8

Schar is a fine footballer. Very little pace but plenty of know-how.

Gave Man City very little to get excited about, mostly due to his excellent positioning and his confidence on the ball.

Dan Burn – 9

I swear I witnessed the moment that Erling Haaland accepted he was never going to get his name on the scoresheet… and that was largely due to the excellence of Dan Burn.

He was an absolute colossus, refused to be bullied by the Norwegian man mountain.

He was blocking, tackling, heading and – when he had to – wrestling. Anything to protect the Newcastle goal.

Lewis Hall – 9

This was the game when – for me – Lewis Hall came of age.

One or two misplaced passes aside, I thought he was magnificent.

A mature and disciplined performance in defence and attack. I don’t think he committed a single foul, which for a defender against Man City, is no mean achievement.

Sandro Tonali – 8

I don’t think he touched the ball more than twice in the first 20 minutes, but he slowly integrated himself into the game, and had a fine second half.

Really good on the ball, not afraid to make a tackle, and looks like he can handle himself if things get feisty. Looks quality.

Bruno Guimaraes – 7

Better than of late, but not back to his imperious best, in my opinion.

Worked hard, but few moments of magic, other than a beautiful pass that led to the penalty. It’ll come.

Joelinton – 8

Loved Joe’s display. Fair enough, he was caught in possession a couple of times, but he was strong, smart and incredibly industrious.

I heard that some fans were whining that he joined the defence at times but I for one am glad he did.

Made a couple of crucial headed clearances, but also held his own in midfield and attack, nearly scored from a half-chance in the first half

Jacob Murphy – 8

An all-action display, rightly recognised by Pep at full-time.

Wasn’t afraid to run at the Man City defence and even got past Gvardiol a couple of times.

A couple of misplaced passes – to be fair he was not the only culprit – but he did a good job for his team.

Anthony Gordon – 9

I said above that this team performance was much more like Newcastle and AG’s display typified that.

He hasn’t been at his usual levels for a large part of this season, but he came good today, plus let’s not forget he is not a centre forward.

God knows how much ground he covered and how much of that was at full pelt, but he gave the Man City defence no rest at all. Ederson will be having nightmares about him, as he was forced into errors throughout the game. Eventually, Ederson brought Gordon down, and he scored a nerveless penalty to get us the point.

Harvey Barnes – 6

Probably our least effective player.

He was up against Kyle Walker, to be fair, so he was never going to find it easy. Didn’t do much wrong but nor did he impact the game.

Joe Willock – 6

It was a hard game for any subs to get into.

The levels of intensity and concentration on display were – I think – hard to acclimatise to, but he did his bit.

Tino Livramento – 6

On for a knackered Trippier and slotted in well.

By the time he arrived, the game was 90% defending for Newcastle and he got up to speed quickly.

Sean Longstaff – 6

Looked a little lost to begin with but adapted well once he’d settled.

Could have got Newcastle a winner, but screwed his effort wide
