Eddie Howe has said Newcastle United could appeal against Anthony Gordon’s red card against Brighton.
Gordon was sent off after clashing with Jan Paul van Hecke during Newcastle’s extra-time defeat to Brighton in the FA Cup’s fifth round.
The winger was dismissed in the 83rd-minute of the tie and pushing his hands into the Dutch defender’s face when tussling for a loose ball. Gordon was stunned at the decision, which rules him out of Newcastle’s Carabao Cup final against Liverpool on March 16th.
Gordon’s red card proved costly as Newcastle exited the FA Cup. After Alexander Isak’s opener from the penalty spot, Brighton forced extra-time through a 44th-minute equaliser from former Newcastle winger Yankuba Minteh.
The Seagulls were also reduced to 10 men when Tariq Lamptey was dismissed in stoppage time, before Danny Welbeck lifted in a fantastic winner for the visitors in extra-time.
However, the talking point for Newcastle at full-time was Gordon’s red card, one that will sideline the England international at Wembley in a fortnight – barring a successful appeal.
Speaking to ITV at full-time, Howe said he felt the decision was ‘harsh’ on first viewing.
“I don’t think Anthony has gone with any intention to do any harm there. I have to see it properly before giving a big opinion on it.
“It looked harsh, but we will have to analyse it properly. We have not seen a replay of it. I am going on my original view, I thought it looked harsh.”
On whether Newcastle will appeal the red card, Howe added: “Possibly. Anthony didn’t mean any harm. I have only seen him very briefly before coming out to you and he was very disappointed.”
