Newcastle United are reportedly considering a January move for Benfica defender Antonio Silva.
According to Portuguese outlet A Bola (PressReader Page 4), the Magpies made a €35 million offer for the 21-year-old centre-back during the summer transfer window, which included a further €15m in potential add-ons.
Benfica rejected the bid, but Newcastle may rekindle their interest in the upcoming transfer window.
Silva has emerged as a key player for Benfica, impressing with his composure, defensive abilities and leadership qualities.
He has started five league games this season and has helped the club keep the two clean sheets, winning 64 percent of his aerial and 71% of his ground duels.
The Portugal international is also excellent on the ball and can be the long-term successor to the ageing Fabian Schar.
His performances have attracted attention from top European clubs, including Juventus, who are monitoring his situation due to injury concerns.
Despite strong interest from several clubs, Benfica are determined to retain Silva until at least the end of the season.
Silva has a €100m release clause in his contract, but Benfica may be open to negotiating a lower fee in the summer transfer window.
Newcastle wanted major defensive reinforcements in the summer transfer window. Manager Eddie Howe pushed for the club to sign Crystal Palace man Marc Guehi, but the Eagles rejected all their advances for the England international.
This left Newcastle handicapped at the back, with their only addition being Lloyd Kelly on a free transfer following his departure from Bournemouth.
They are still keen on refreshing their rearguard as they look to fight for one of the Champions League places.
