Newcastle midfielder Mo Sangare netted his first international goal in a World Cup qualifier on Wednesday.
African qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup began this week and Liberia kicked off with a win, beating Sierra Leone 3-1 in the first leg of their first round meeting.
Sangare, 20, was on the scoresheet in just his third appearance for the hosts.
His smartly converted penalty put Liberia ahead with just eight minutes remaining.
They will now take a two-goal lead to Sierra Leone.
Sangare, who is yet to feature for the Newcastle first team, has started four games for the club’s U23 side this season.
Liberia have entered the qualifying rounds for every World Cup since 1982 but have never made it to a World Cup finals.
