Newcastle take Everton to penalties in Women’s League Cup | OneFootball

Newcastle United’s debut in the FA Women’s League Cup group stage saw them take a point against Everton, who bagged a second one from winning the shoot-out.

Demi Stokes scored just five minutes in for Newcastle but Emma Bissell levelled a similar time after the break and when it came to penalties, Everton’s goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan was the star with three saves.

Bristol City were another Championship side to hold WSL opposition but this time it was the lower-ranked side who won on penalties. The Foxes’ Shanna Chossenotte had scored three minutes after coming off the bench but Lexi Lloyd-Smith levelled for the Robins 10 minutes from time. Jackie Burns made three saves in the shoot-out, a feat matched by Janina Leitzig but to no avail.

Manchester United beat Liverpool as Melvine Malard’s early goal was added to midway through the second half by Rachel Williams.

Brighton were 3-0 winners at Birmingham City but it had taken over 70 minutes to breakdown the Championship side. Guro Bergsvand made the breakthrough with Maisie Symonds and Fran Kirby adding one each.

Aston Villa saw off top-flight newcomers Crystal Palace with two late goals. Kirsty Hanson struck first in the 80th minute, Katie Robinson making sure of the win in added time.

Charlton Athletic equalised on half-time against Tottenham, as Katie Bradley replied to Luana Buhler’s early effort. Spurs took the lead for a second time, when Jess Naz netted four minutes from the end of the 90.

West Ham ran out 6-1 winners over Portsmouth, although Pompey had levelled before falling behind again just before half time. Seraina Piubel scored for the Hammers, Megan Hornby responded from the spot but the game was decided as Emma Harries netted either side of the interval and Viviane Asseyi also bagged a swift brace. Riko Ueki then rounded off the scoring at the end.

Durham won away to Blackburn with a dramatic late double. Grace Riglar’s goal saw Rovers lead for over an hour, until Kaila Novak cancelled it out and Eleanor Ryan-Doyle grabbed an 87th-minute decider.
