An official response explaining the club position on PSR and the January transfer window (and the summer transfer window…).

Newcastle United fans having seen both Miguel Almiron and Lloyd Kelly leave in this latest transfer window, as well as a number of younger players on loan, but not a single first team squad signing.

The Kelly and Almiron deals expected to eventually net Newcastle United £30m+.

Also, Lloyd Kelly was a free agent when signed, whilst Miguel Almiron had been at the club six years.

This meant that all of the transfer fee(s) that will be received for Kelly will be pure profit and with Almiron, all but a minimal part of the money received for him will be the same, in PSR terms.

Great then to get an official Newcastle United overview on all of this, as delivered so clearly by Eddie Howe on Monday.

Eddie Howe explains club position on PSR and the January transfer window – 4 February 2025:

“I said right at the start [of this transfer window] it was not a case of looking at incomings.

“[Instead it was] A case of trying to manage outgoings and not weaken the squad too much that it would be affected.

“We have managed PSR and we gave done that.

“The two sales [of Miguel Almiron and Lloyd Kelly] achieve that.

“The squad is lighter but full of quality.

“We can still achieve success [this season].”

Eddie Howe asked specifically about the sale of Lloyd Kelly:

“I don’t think it was necessarily my decision to let him leave, very reluctant from our side.

“Lloyd is a player we just signed, we believe in his qualities.

“Slightly frustrating he didn’t play more but that’s perhaps been down to the form of others.

“We have had to try and manage PSR and make decisions that benefit us, this is one of those.

“An exciting opportunity for him.”

Eddie Howe asked if things now look brighter for the summer transfer window:

“The past year, we have been managing a situation where we had to make decisions that we wouldn’t have necessarily made from a football perspective.

“Hopefully by being prudent and making good decisions now, in the future we won’t be making those decisions, and we’ll be making purely football-based decisions.”

This January transfer window has been a massive step forward.

To do two deals like these, for players who are nowhere near being first choice for the starting eleven, is brilliant business.

So many journalists and fans have tried to make out that Eddie Howe was saying that Lloyd Kelly had been sold against his wishes.

That is simply not the case.

Eddie Howe has said this about every player he has sold, the likes of ASM, Wood, Shelvey…

That if it had been a purely football choice he wouldn’t have sold them.

However, those sales helped Newcastle United, especially in terms of PSR, to have the flex to bring in the likes of Isak, Gordon, Tonali, Hall and so on.

This is the same.
