Newcastle United should sell Lloyd Kelly – If the price is right

Now I’m no financial boffin and couldn’t do the mathematics and accountancy that go into keeping on the right side of PSR.

However, heading into this January transfer window, I was aware of the necessity for Newcastle United to try and offload fringe players.

The likes of excellent club servant Miguel Almiron, even Kieran Trippier, have been linked with moves away from the Toon for a year now.

The plan is of course to loosen the purse strings and free up the wage bill, to hopefully bring in at least one new arrival to bolster and strengthen the first team.

We are now into the fourth week of January, yet as I type, there have still been no signings or (permanent) outgoings at St James’ Park.

With the club riding high in the Premier League, seemingly having one foot in the Carabao Cup Final, also hopefully on a good run in the FA Cup, surely now isn’t the time for Eddie Howe to keep his powder dry.

Potential targets will have been identified for months and I can imagine Sporting Director Paul Mitchell chomping at the bit to do business and bring in his first significant signing.

I have been very interested in the recent reports surrounding Lloyd Kelly.

Reports claiming Newcastle United had turned down an offer of around £6m for Kelly, from Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce.

Next it was claimed that Italian giants Juventus had entered the fray and were supposedly offering nearly double the Turkish club’s offer.

I believe if Newcastle United receive an offer of around the £15m mark, we would be mugs not to take it.

Lloyd Kelly is a third choice left centre-back, who hasn’t been able to string a run of first team appearances together, since he arrived on a free transfer from Bournemouth last summer.

After running his contract down at the Cherries, Kelly is on decent wages at the Toon.

So to sell for canny money and pure profit after Lloyd Kelly has only been here a little over six months, seems like a no-brainer to me.

You never know what to believe but there are various claims in the media, amongst those I have read some claiming that Lloyd Kelly is unhappy with his lack of first team opportunities and wants away, others reporting Eddie Howe supposedly wants him to stay, but he isn’t the one counting the beans in the United boardroom.

I say sell Lloyd Kelly at the right price to help finance a move for a player that will fit straight into one of our obviously ‘Pretty Vacant’ priority positions.

To quote the Sex Pistols, “There’s no point in asking if you don’t reply.”

I hope this isn’t how Juve, Fenerbahce or any other of Kelly’s potential suitors and admirers end up feeling.

I hope Eddie Howe and Newcastle United won’t give them the rubber lug and are hopefully ready to consider any reasonable offers that are put down on the table.
