Bailey Wright’s Rotherham United did not go to plan after his late window loan move from Sunderland to the Millers.

The Aussie replaced Grant Hall in the 69th minute of the club’s goalless draw against Sheffield United, and was then immediately knocked unconscious in an aerial challenge with Ben Osborn.

Wright was withdrawn due to suffering a concussion, with his debut lasting just four minutes, and most of that was when he was receiving treatment, before he was substituted.

The 30-year-old has made a quick recovery and made his full debut in midweek at Reading, and he reflected on the bizarre and concerning moment when he guested on The Official EFL Podcast.

He said: “I couldn’t believe it happened.

“It wasn’t even really a challenge that you’d expect to get concussed from.

“I just got caught right across the jaw and the next minute I was lying on the deck, completely knocked out really.

“Not the debut that you dream of.”

It will be a relief to all involved at Rotherham that Wright has made a swift and full recovery, having been something of a marquee signing for the Millers.

They are fighting for their lives at the bottom end of the second tier and a character like Wright should aid their bid to stay up, especially after Sean Morrison suffered a season-ending injury.

Richard Wood Jamie Lindsay Conor Washington Chiedozie Ogbene

Ben Osborn did not act too concerned in jogging away after knocking Wright out, of course by accident.

It was just a freak incident that can happen on a football pitch when limbs are flailing around and eyes solely on the ball.

Wright’s full debut arrived in the Millers’ 2-1 defeat at Reading on Tuesday evening, a match that they would have seen as a chance to take something given the Royals’ recent form and Andy Carroll proved to be the difference between the two teams.
