Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor has provided a squad update ahead of the club’s Women’s Super League opener against Aston Villa on Friday.

The former Lyon manager, who arrived in London to replace Emma Hayes, confirmed Niamh Charles is unavailable after undergoing surgery on a dislocated shoulder.

The England defender sustained the injury during a pre-season win over Feyenoord with Bompastor assuring Charles is fine mentally and will hopefully be available soon.

Additionally, Catarina Macario and Erin Cuthbert return to full fitness and are in contention to feature in the reigning champions’ season opener.
