Nico Schlotterbeck will be out of action for the foreseeable future, Borussia Dortmund confirms.

The central defender was forced off just before halftime during BVB’s 4-2 loss again Bayern Munich last weekend. The 23-year-old German international has torn a muscle fibre in his leg which also involves a tendon.

Dortmund released a statement on Monday afternoon explaining that Schlotterbeck will be absent from training and matches for the time being. However, no exact timeframe has yet been given.

Schlotterbeck has been a regular participant in the BVB backline this season since his move from SC Freiburg last summer. The defender has played 37 times this campaign in all competitions and has one of the highest interception percentages in the Bundesliga.

It’s likely that veteran Mats Hummels will replace the injured Schlotterbeck for the time being. Dortmund play RB Leipzig on Wednesday in the quarter-finals of the DFB Pokal before another huge match in the Bundesliga against Union Berlin on Saturday.
