Nine arrests made at Manchester City’s defeat to Liverpool amid reports of ‘tragedy chanting’ | OneFootball

Merseyside Police have confirmed that nine men were arrested at the match between Liverpool and Manchester City on Sunday afternoon, as per a statement this week.

Arne Slot’s side moved 11 points clear of the reigning Premier League champions on Sunday afternoon via a 2-0 victory over Manchester City, as Pep Guardiola’s side remained winless for over a month.

A first-half strike from Cody Gakpo as part of a dominant performance from the hosts was followed up by a second-half effort from the penalty spot as Mohamed Salah converted to put the result beyond any doubt.

Whilst plenty of attention is undoubtedly focussed on Manchester City’s seven-game winless streak across competitions, there is also now discussion around events off the field at Anfield, and the behaviour of supporters.

A statement issued by Merseyside Police following the game read, “Nine men were arrested at the match between Liverpool and Manchester City yesterday, Sunday 1 December, following reports of tragedy chanting.”The statement continued, “Those arrested were a 38-year-old man from Audenshaw; a 32-year-old man from Macclesfield; a 52-year-old man from Denton; a 57-year-old man from Failsworth; a 58-year-old man from Rochdale; a 47-year-old man from Rochdale; a 53-year-old man from Manchester; a 19-year-old from Medlar-with-Wesham, Lancashire;  and a 28-year-old from Prestwich, who was also arrested on suspicion of common assault.

“Six of the nine arrested have been bailed, two have been discharged for voluntary attendance (58-year-old man and 47-year-old man, both from Rochdale) and one has been charged.

“Kian Holt, 19 years, of Medlar-with-Wesham has been charged with a public order offence under S3 Football Offence Act 1991 (tragedy chanting). He will appear at Sefton Magistrates Court on 8 January.”
