Martin Odegaard has tipped his international team-mates to inspire Arsenal to a successful Premier League title challenge this season.

The Norwegian international had a free summer after his country failed to qualify for the European Championship.

Meanwhile, he watched as a dozen fellow Gunners qualified. Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice and Aaron Ramsdale jetted out to Germany with England. David Raya was involved in the final last month with Spain and there were impressive runouts for France defender William Saliba, Belgium’s Leandro Trossard, Poland’s Jakub Kiwior and German star Kai Havertz. Brazil duo Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Magalhaes were on Copa America duty, in the US.

Fears of early season burnout for those Arsenal players who did represent their country in Germany seem misplaced on the evidence of their opening weekend 2-0 win over Wolves.

Odegaard explained: “As soon as we finished the last game everyone said we just wanted to come back even stronger. We have done that in preseason, the ones who came early, the ones who came later, I think it is just the level we are at, how connected we are, and how aligned we are. We all want the same thing, so it was easy.

“It is so tough, a lot of games, so just shows how professional they are and the level we are on now.”

The Arsenal captain pinpointed Saka, however, as the Starboy in the squad. He added: “I think he will just get better and better. Every day in training he is working so hard, working on the small details to get better, and I’m sure he is just going to improve and improve and I can’t wait to see where it takes him”

“I think there is no limit for this guy, he is unbelievable. The quality he has professionally, how much he loves the game, and how much he puts into the game every day, the sky is the limit and I am just happy to have him on my team. We want to help him to improve all the time and push him.”
