The Premier League season has been one to remember so far, and Liverpool’s resurgence to the top of the table has fans dreaming. In a recent episode of The Daily Red, part of the Anfield Index podcast, Dave Hendrick shared his insights on Liverpool’s performance, Arsenal’s recent struggles, and how these two teams measure up this season. Hendrick’s analysis reveals an intriguing look at the title race, with Liverpool under new manager Arne Slot looking poised to challenge for the top spot.
Reflecting on Liverpool’s recent 2-1 victory over Brighton, Hendrick noted the significance of Liverpool reclaiming the top position. “It turned out to be pretty much a perfect weekend for Liverpool fans,” he remarked, citing both Liverpool’s victory and losses by key rivals, including Arsenal. This victory brought renewed hope to Liverpool supporters, who have watched their team surpass expectations despite significant changes, including the departure of Jurgen Klopp earlier this year.
Hendrick didn’t hold back in expressing his disbelief at Arsenal’s inability to maintain consistent form, especially given their summer expectations. According to Hendrick, “Throughout the summer, we had all the talking heads talking about how Arsenal were going to win the league this year… What was the consensus on Liverpool? Well, with Klopp gone, they probably won’t even make top four.” However, Liverpool’s start under Slot has proven the doubters wrong, and Hendrick pointed out that Arsenal’s title aspirations might already be slipping away as Liverpool pulls ahead.

Delving deeper into the comparison between the two teams, Hendrick highlighted Arsenal’s struggles in key games. After suffering a recent loss to Newcastle, he noted that Arsenal fans seemed “unable to come up with an excuse for why they lost.” For Hendrick, this loss underscores Arsenal’s reliance on individual players, particularly mentioning that without Martin Ødegaard, their creativity suffers.
Hendrick took a further swipe at Arsenal’s fan base, calling out their tendency to blame external factors when results go against them. “If they lose a game, it’s never because they weren’t the better team,” he observed, hinting at a lack of accountability that has stunted Arsenal’s growth as a title contender.
A critical part of Hendrick’s analysis centred on the financial gulf in player investments between the clubs. Arsenal has invested heavily in recent years, with close to £800 million spent on player acquisitions, while Liverpool’s spending has been much more measured. “They’ve spent the better part of 800 million pounds, and we’ve spent less than half that,” Hendrick noted. He pointed to Liverpool’s recent success in Europe and domestic cups as proof of their superior strategy despite having spent considerably less.
In discussing the managerial change at Liverpool, Hendrick emphasised that there is “zero pressure” on Liverpool this season. “We lost Jurgen Klopp in the summer… Nobody expects us to win the league this year,” he argued, positioning Liverpool as a team that is defying expectations. By contrast, Arsenal, with Mikel Arteta at the helm, finds themselves under mounting pressure to deliver.
As the episode continued, Hendrick reflected on what lies ahead for Arsenal and Liverpool in the Premier League race. With Liverpool sitting seven points ahead of Arsenal, Hendrick believes Arsenal fans are now “trying to convince themselves that all the pressure is on Liverpool.” But Hendrick is not convinced, pointing out that Liverpool’s lead and more favourable fixtures give them an upper hand. Looking ahead to critical fixtures, he speculated on the potential widening gap, especially as Arsenal faces challenging matchups like Chelsea, while Liverpool prepares for winnable games that could extend their lead.
In Hendrick’s words, “If we beat Villa and they lose to Chelsea, that’s 10 points.” This cushion, he argued, would grant Liverpool a strong defensive position as they navigate the remainder of the season. With a hint of optimism, he added, “Maybe we’ll have a big old party for them and show them what it is to win a Premier League title in the 2020s.” Hendrick’s confidence in Liverpool’s ability to sustain their current form suggests a team that is ready to push forward, unbothered by the “pressure” Arsenal fans believe they face.
In summary, The Daily Red podcast, featuring Hendrick’s outspoken analysis, underscores the complex and evolving rivalry between Liverpool and Arsenal. As Hendrick puts it, this season could prove that Liverpool’s strategic investments and resilience make them the stronger team, while Arsenal’s inflated spending and overconfidence might once again leave them falling short. For now, it’s Liverpool who hold the advantage in the Premier League, and as Hendrick emphatically stated, the Reds are “in a great position” to challenge for the title.
