Barcelona have been actively working on contract renewals in recent weeks, ensuring that key players secure their long-term future at the club. However, there is one renewal that remains at a standstill—Frenkie de Jong’s.
Despite ongoing speculation in the media, a report from MARCA affirms that there has been no movement regarding an extension for the midfielder, and there are no signs of progress in the near future.
Reports indicate that Barcelona and De Jong’s camp have been in contact for over a year regarding an extension until June 2026. However, discussions have been minimal, and the positions of both parties remain far apart.
What is even more concerning for the club is that there has been no communication in recent weeks, and no meetings are scheduled to take place anytime soon.
At this stage, Barcelona have little expectation of securing an agreement in the immediate future.

The club believes that the situation will have to be resolved by the summer, at which point a final decision must be made—either De Jong signs a new deal, or he will be placed on the transfer market.
The club’s stance is firm: they will not allow him to leave on a free transfer under any circumstances.
That being said, Barcelona are not ruling out the possibility of a shift in the situation. The midfielder’s role in the team has become more prominent in recent weeks, having started four of the last five matches.
With his influence on the pitch growing once again, there is a chance that his perspective on the renewal could change.
For now, though, the deadlock remains, and unless there is a breakthrough, De Jong’s long-term future at Barcelona remains uncertain.
The coming months will be decisive in determining whether he continues at the club or if Barcelona look to cash in on him before his contract expires.
