The USA international has been a key figure for the Canaries over the past few years, and he had started the current campaign very well, scoring four goals and registering five assists in his first 12 games.

However, Sargent hasn’t pulled on a yellow shirt since the 3-3 draw at home to Middlesbrough at the end of October due to a groin problem.

Whilst Norwich have picked up back-to-back victories in their past two games, it’s fair to say that they were missing Sargent initially, as they failed to win in their first four games without the striker, which included three successive defeats.

So, all connected to the club will be eager for the former Werder Bremen man to be back out on the pitch, and Thorup gave an update on the player when speaking to the club’s media.

Surgery went fine, he's doing well, but realistically it will be the New Year when we see him next. He's in a good mood, he was out there doing a little bit of running earlier but we have to be careful.”

Josh Sargent can play a big role in Norwich City’s season

Of course, it’s a real shame for Norwich that they will have to navigate through a very busy period without Sargent, as he is an excellent player at this level.

But, these things happen in football, and the past two games show that they can still get results without the number nine, with Borja Sainz emerging as arguably the best individual in the Championship this season.

When you add Sargent back to the side, it makes Norwich a very dangerous attacking side, and Thorup will know that the 24-year-old can still make some big contributions this season.

The club are right not to rush him back though, and there is still a lot of football to be played in the final months of the season when he does return to the pitch.

Norwich City will believe promotion is possible

The Canaries have been inconsistent under Thorup this season, but, when they’re at their best, they look like a very good team, and they’re clearly making progress under the new boss.

As it stands, they’re five points away from the play-off places, and the Norfolk outfit will surely feel another top six finish is a realistic target.

The January window offers a chance to refresh the squad, and having Sargent back will be a massive boost for Throup, but his immediate focus will be on building on their recent victories over the next month until he returns.
