Nuno Tavares (23) has become Olympique de Marseille’s priority signing at left-back, with talks to sign FC Nantes’ Quentin Merlin (21) stalling, according to L’Équipe.
Merlin’s transfer to Marseille looked to be advancing positively. According to Foot Mercato, terms had been agreed with the France U21 international, and talks between the clubs were well underway in order to agree on a fee. Les Canaris wanted €12m for the left-back, but the move was also contingent upon Nantes finding a replacement, which is proving more complicated than expected.
Nantes had targeted a move for RC Lens’ Massadio Haïdara (31), who is currently injured, however, it quickly became clear that a deal to sign him would be possible. Without a replacement lined up, Merlin’s departure has now been thrown into doubt. Marseille are determined to quickly sign a left-back and are therefore now prioritising a move for Tavares, who spent last season on loan at the Vélodrome.
The Portuguese full-back, who is currently on loan at Nottingham Forest from Arsenal, is keen on a return to OM, according to RMC Sport. Marseille’s executives believe this deal to be simpler to pull off, even if an agreement must be reached between Arsenal and Nottingham Forest to cut the current loan deal short.
