Italy U21 coach Carmine Nunziata was disappointed to see the Azzurrini waste a two-goal lead in a friendly against France U21 but was delighted with the performance against a ‘quality’ team.

Cesare Casadei and Giuseppe Ambrosino’s goals were not enough for Italy U21 to secure a victory in a friendly against France on Friday. The match at the Stadio Castellani in Empoli ended in a 2-2 draw.

“There’s a bit of disappointment with the result, but it was an open game on both sides,” Nunziata told Rai Sport.

“I have to say we dominated proceedings and did really well for a long time. We suffered in other moments against a team with quality and technique. I think it was an excellent game.”

Italy U21 conceded twice within seven minutes in the second half.

“It’s a shame, but it’s part of football,” argued Nunziata.

“I must congratulate the lads because they faced a strong team but still dominated proceedings and pressed high. It was a great performance that gives us confidence for the future.”

The Azzurrini have one more friendly next week, but the big target is next summer’s European championship.

“We must have consistency and work hard,” said the coach.

“I have to say this is a fantastic and motivated group. They want to do well. Surely, they are ready.

“I tried to make some changes today to give a chance to lads who hadn’t had much playing time, like Ambrosino,” concluded Nunziata.

“We’ll change again in the next one. We must use these matches to involve all the lads.”

Italy U21’s next game is against Ukraine U21 on Tuesday, November 19.
