The match started with two quick goals and ended with a similar flurry of activity as New York manager Chris Armas earned his first win as a coach.

Red Bulls appeared to score after Alejandro “Kaku” Romero picked out Bradley Wright-Phillips in a gap. The prolific MLS goal-scorer easily chipped goalkeeper Tim Melia but the assistant referee had raised his flag.

Center referee Kevin Stott heard confirmation from the VAR that BWP was onside, however, and Stott awarded the fourth minute goal, his 12th of the year and Kaku’s 11st assist of the campaign.

Graham Zusi fired a low cross into the goalmouth for Johnny Russell to redirect into the back of the net from six yards out to equalize just four minutes later. The quick strike was Russell’s seventh goal of the season.

The score held at 1-1 despite defensive errors and a back-and-forth nature to the contest. Sporting KC took the lead in the second half through a left-footed cannon by Roger Espinoza.

Zusi registered his second assist of the night with Espinoza’s 51st minute goal.

On a quality pass from Tyler Adams, Marc Rzatkowski scored his first in MLS in emphatic fashion in the 72nd minute.

Rzatkowski wasn’t content with one left-footed rocket in the match and one-upped himself just seven minutes later.

The 28-year old German midfielder had played 441 scoreless minutes in MLS before Saturday’s match.

Both teams came into Saturday’s match sitting in third place in their respective conference standings, and both within distance of Atlanta United in the Supporters’ Shield race.

Sporting KC was without either of their first-choice centre-backs as Matt Besler stayed on the bench and Ike Opara was out with a tweaked hamstring.

After holding the lead in the second half, Peter Vermes will be disappointed not to walk away with even one point. On the other side, Armas will be delighted to grab his first win as a coach on the second time of asking.
