Wigan Athletic had a brilliant season last year as they achieved promotion up to the Championship finishing at the top of the league.

As they look ahead to next season, Leam Richardson will be hoping his side are able to compete in the second tier and retain their place there.

The club have made a few signings but having lost some players as well, there is still some work to be done especially in terms of senior additions.

However, with their season getting underway at home against Preston this weekend, the Latics will be hoping they are well prepared.

With that in mind, here we take a look at some of the latest news coming out of the DW Stadium.

Ryan Nyambe

The club recently confirmed the signing of defender Nyambe from Blackburn Rovers.

The 24-year-old left Ewood Park this summer following the expiration of his contract with the club but having made 31 appearances last season and playing regularly for the club after coming up through the academy means he has plenty of experience under his belt.

However, he has only signed an initial one year deal with the club which may suggest there’s not much security in this deal.

That being said, it’s a great signing that will improve Richardson’s side next season as Nyambe is one of the most reliable defenders in the league.

Jordan Jones

Whilst the Latics have been adding to their ranks, they have also lost Jordan Jones as he has departing to Kilmarnock on loan.

The winger joined Wigan last summer but made just nine appearances last season before going on loan to St Mirren for the second half of the season.

The 27-year-old has played in Scotland before spending three seasons there between 2016 and 2019 so you can see this being a success for him.

After this season the player has another season on his contract so this move could be the decider on his future at Wigan.

Jamie McGrath

According to the Daily Record, Aberdeen have been considering a move for McGrath this summer.

The 25-year-old signed for the Latics in January but has struggled for game time since then making just two league appearances.

The player has worked with Aberdeen boss Jim Goodwin before so a loan move could be what he needs this season to get him going again.

The midfielder is under contract until 2024 with Wigan so if a loan move went well, he could still return to Wigan and have a future with the club.
