2024 might have been a better season compared to 2023, but New York City FC is still not where the club should be. Truthfully, they should be competing for a top-four finish every season while also remaining competitive enough to strive for a trophy. The team also needs to win more and put out a better product on the pitch.
Part of why they did not perform to the NYCFC fans' standards was Nick Cushing. He was not the right head coach for the Pigeons, and thankfully the club did not keep him despite improving over the past season. He led the team to a sixth-place finish in the Eastern Conference after ending 2023 in 11th. However, all of his issues remained on full display.
As a result, supporters are pleased that the not-well-liked head coach is gone. At the same time, they are hungry for NYCFC to play better and end the 2025 season in a better position. And like every fanbase in Major League Soccer, they want a trophy too.
Therefore, the NYCFC front office is under pressure to be successful in 2025. There is no question the club wants success and wants the players to perform well. However, the driving force to do well next season must be for the supporters.
It is important to start with the obvious. The Pigeons have not played well enough under Cushing's tenure. Yes, they did better this past season, but everyone saw there were some games that NYCFC should have won if they were coached properly or used the proper substitutions.
Then, the majority of the supporters are from the New York City tri-state area. Fans from here expect only the best and are impatient when teams do not do well. That is why the club cannot afford to have a poor or average season in the upcoming campaign. Otherwise, supporters' anger and impatience will rise significantly and be higher than it was before.
Plus, NYCFC owes the fans because the front office stuck with Cushing longer than they should have. Many saw he was not the right choice. One can only wonder whether the Pigeons would have had better seasons with the right head coach. 2023 probably would have seen some struggles due to the roster turnover, but they should have played better with the players available.
The impatience of the fanbase is noticeable, and everyone wants a better product on the pitch. If NYCFC fails to find success next season, then the fans will probably become more vocal, angrier, and actually commit to significant protests at games and online. 2025 is the most important season in recent years, so ideally the front office will bring in the right coach to lead the team to glory.
