The Oakland Roots Soccer Club have some of the best soccer merch in the U.S. So when I heard that they were collaborating with the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA for short) and local artist Muzae Sesay on a limited edition line, I had to check it out.
Turns out that this collaboration is to support a SFMOMA exhibition devoted to the intersection of art and sport called Get In the Game: Sport, Art, Culture. With over 200 artworks and design objects inspired by sports, athleticism, competition and play, it runs through Feb. 18, 2025. Some of the pieces include Maurizio Cattelan’s Stadium (1991), a foosball table playable by 22 people at a time, and Gabriel Orozco’s Ping Pond Table (1998) a four-sided ping-pong table with a pond in place of a net. You gotta love art!

The merch is minimalistic but cool. Fabrics build on the warm, earthy color patterns common in Muzae Sesay’s recent paintings, while the Oakland Roots lettering uses their signature rainbow patterning.
In addition to the hoodie, there’s a sweatshirt, two t-shirts and totes available.
There’s also a limited edition jersey that I believe is launching in March around the 2025 season start. Can’t wait to see that one unveiled!
