Bukayo Saka had opened the scoring for Arsenal after just eight minutes in their first Champions League game since 2016/17, before goals from Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Jesus put Mikel Arteta’s side in complete control before half-time.

Odegaard was delighted with the performance from his side and says Arsenal are targeting a run to the latter stages of the tournament.

“You saw the motivation and energy right from the start. To be back in this competition is huge for this club,” the Norwegian told TNT Sports.

“We are in this competition to compete and to fight to go all the way. It is a great start, we have to keep working hard and we will see.

“I was eager to get on the scoresheet! I found the space in the corner and it was good.”

The 24-year-old hailed the atmosphere inside the Emirates as Arsenal fans celebrated a return to the Champions League after a six season absence.

“It was amazing. You could feel before the game it was a special game for everyone. The atmosphere, the Champions League and everything around was brilliant. We have to thank the fans again.

“We have to recover now, get the legs fresh again.”
