Alexander Meyer has today put pen-to-paper on a new Borussia Dortmund contract that will keep him at the club until 2025.

“Alex is much more than a second goalkeeper. Whenever he was needed, he showed his skills at an extraordinarily high level. He is an absolute team player, a great footballer and a very reliable professional with life experience who gives a team peace and security,” BVB’s Sebastian Kehl told the club’s official channels.

Meyer (32), who joined Borussia Dortmund last summer on a free transfer from Jahn Regensburg, played 12 games across all competitions in the absence of Gregor Kobel, who missed several games in September and March through injury.

Upon signing an extension, Meyer added: “I’m happy about the trust of BVB and the associated extension of the contract. From day one in Dortmund, I was made to feel very welcome by everyone and I felt at home right away.

“Everyone saw last season what is possible with this club. I will do my part to ensure that we celebrate successes and win titles in the near future. I’m very happy to remain part of the BVB family.”

Meyer will again play second-fiddle to Kobel, but remains an excellent second-choice goalkeeper for Die Schwarzgelben. Of his 12 games for BVB, he kept three clean sheets, and also featured five times in the Champions League, including the second-leg of their last 16 defeat against Chelsea.

There had been discussions about a return to Stuttgart for Meyer, where he played between 2017 and 2019, but the 32-year-old wanted to remain a part of the BVB family.
