Stade Rennais have completed the signing of Alidu Seidu (23). The Ghanaian international arrives from Clermont Foot and has signed a four-and-a-half-year deal with Les Rennais.
Rennes have been working to sign a centre-back all window and they now have their man. Having initially shown interest in AS Monaco’s Guillermo Maripán, their interest quickly turned to Clermont’s Seidu. Negotiations over a move have been ongoing since mid-January and after an €11m deal – without bonuses – was reached, the transfer was finally concluded on Tuesday. The Ghana international, who has now returned from the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), has signed a deal until the end of the 2027/28 season.
Seidu was presented to the media on Tuesday, where he expressed his joy at having joined Les Rennais. “I didn’t hesitate for a second,” said Seidu, reflecting on his decision to join Rennes. The centre-back will wear the number 36 shirt for the club, and he shared an anecdote, revealing why he had chosen the number.
“When I first arrived in France, I spent a year at ESTAC Troyes. It didn’t go well, and I hurt my knee and needed an operation. The number of the block (in the hospital) was 36,” said Seidu, who has since continued to grow in stature in France, firstly at Clermont and now at Rennes.
