Bayer Leverkusen have confirmed the departure of full-back Mitchel Bakker who has signed for Atalanta.
Die Werkself will receive €10m for the Dutchman, however, the Italian side have not disclosed any details surrounding Bakker’s contract. Interest towards Bakker had been shown by Inter, AS Roma and Werder Bremen, but the 23-year-old elected to sign for Atalanta despite having agreed terms with Bremen.
“We would like to thank Mitch for his commitment to Bayer 04 and wish him every success for his move to Italy,” commented sporting director Simon Rolfes. The Dutchman joined Leverkusen in the summer of 2021 for a fee of €7m, meaning that the Black and Reds will make a small profit on the full-back.
Over the course of his time in Germany, Bakker has appeared 70 times for Die Werkself scoring five goals and collecting seven assists. He would be a main feature in the side last campaign helping Leverkusen reach the Europa League semi-finals.
Xabi Alonso looks to have already replaced Bakker with the acquisition of Alejandro Grimaldo, who signed from Benfica in May as a free transfer. The 23-year-old is the seventh departure from the club this summer as Alonso looks to rejuvenate a young Leverkusen side.
