MLS outfit Charlotte FC have announced the signing of Belgian midfielder Brecht Dejaegere, who has signed on a free transfer after leaving Toulouse at the end of last season.
The former Toulouse captain, who lifted the Coupe de France last season after a 5-1 win over Nantes in the final, was part of a cohort of key players to leave the club on the expiry of their contracts.
This included the team’s entire starting midfield – Dejaegere, along with Branco van den Boomen and Stijn Spierings. Although they were initially open to staying in the south of France, Toulouse’s reported insistence on offering one-year deals – and their belief that they could find replacements with analytics – saw talks break down.
Dejaegere will have spent three seasons with Les Violets, having spent the majority of his career up until then at Gent. The 32-year-old has signed a two-year deal with the North Carolina outfit.
