The DFB have announced that German national team head coach Julian Nagelsmann has extended his contract until 2028.

Nagelsmann had only extended his contract before EURO 2024 in the summer until after the 2026 World Cup turning down a return to Bayern Munich. The new extension is now valid until after EURO 2028 in Great Britain and Ireland. The contract was signed this Friday as part of the celebration of the 125th anniversary of the German Football Federation (DFB).

On extending his contract, Nagelsmann said:

“In September 2023, when I joined the DFB, I could not have imagined being national coach beyond the home European Championship. Our big goal was a successful tournament. But I also couldn’t have imagined back then what the national team means to the people of Germany. How many hearts it reaches and moves. This great feedback that we all, not just me, get every day shows us that we are on the right path together. And it is not over yet. We have all created something together – fans, team and coaching staff – that we now want to successfully develop further. We want to win titles together.”

DFB President Bernd Neuendorf adds:

“The extension of Julian Nagelsmann’s contract is a very important signal, especially in view of our 125th anniversary as an association. It shows that we are not resting on our past successes, but are instead working on new ones. The position of national coach is of central importance in this regard. Julian Nagelsmann fills this role perfectly with his sporting expertise, but also his keen sense for the team and the fans. So today we can not only look back on an eventful past of the DFB and all of football in Germany, but above all look forward with great confidence.”

Since replacing Hansi Flick as national team head coach, Nagelsmann has led a rejuvenation of the German national team, not only on the pitch but in the eyes of the public. Despite losing to eventual winners Spain in the quarter-finals of EURO 2024, people fell in love with the German national team once again. While on the pitch, Nagelsmann has gotten the best out of the team and has found a way for Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz to co-exist.

His work means that Germany are not only one of the favourites for the World Cup in 2026 but they also have the chance of some minor international silverware this summer if they get past Italy in the UEFA Nations League Finals quarter-final. This mini-tournament will also be held in Germany.

The decision to extend his contract also means that Nagelsmann can be central to the integration of even more exciting prospects into the senior men’s national set up in the years to come.
