Manchester United have signed Uruguay international Manuel Ugarte (23) from Paris Saint-Germain, both clubs have announced. The 23-year-old defensive midfielder has put pen to paper over a five-year contract with an option for a further year which, if triggered, would keep Ugarte at Old Trafford until 2030. Manchester United and PSG reportedly reached an agreement worth €60m (a €50m fixed transfer fee plus €10m in performance-related add-ons).

PSG eventually succeeded in not missing out financially on a player they just bought one year ago from Sporting CP in a €60m deal. Despite a promising start in the French capital, Ugarte quickly fell down the pecking order under PSG head coach Luis Enrique. The Spaniard reportedly did not sanction Ugarte’s arrival as he was appointed after the Uruguayan arrived at the Parc des Princes. João Neves’ signing – and the Portuguese midfielder’s tremendous debut with Les Parisiens – only confirmed Ugarte did not have a future anymore with the Ligue 1 giants.

Ugarte is Manchester United’s second big-money signing from Ligue 1 this summer transfer window following the €70m arrival of Leny Yoro from Lille OSC. Manuel Ugarte won’t make his Old Trafford debut this Sunday with Manchester United hosting Premier League archrivals Liverpool considering the club missed this Friday’s deadline.
