Following his red card late in the game against RCD Mallorca, Real Madrid defender Ferland Mendy has learned the length of his suspension.

The French left-back was shown a direct red card by the referee after a rash tackle on Mallorca’s goalscorer Vedat Muriqi deep in stoppage time.

While Mendy issued an apology to the Kosovan striker immediately after the ill-timed challenge, a red card was a given considering the serious nature of the foul.

Referee Soto Grado recorded the expulsion in his official match report as follows: “The player Ferland Mendy was sent off for the following reason: for a tackle using excessive force while fighting for the ball.”

As such, there were speculations that the 29-year-old could be facing a ban longer than the usual one-match suspension.

But it has now been confirmed by the Competitions Committee that Mendy will be suspended for just one match.

It would mean that the left-back will miss this weekend’s La Liga encounter against Real Valladolid at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Mendy has been a regular fixture in the starting XI for Carlo Ancelotti when fit and available and as such his absence will be felt.

But Los Blancos have Fran Garcia ready to fill in for the Frenchman for the weekend’s clash against Valladolid.
