Rennes Norwegian left-back Birger Meling (28) has signed for FC Copenhagen, both clubs have announced. The 28-year-old has signed a four-year deal with the Danish Superligaen side. Rennes and Copenhagen reportedly shook hands on a €2m transfer fee. Meling featured 73 times for Stade Rennais since his arrival two years ago, registering six assists. The Norway international was not contending for the starting left-back position at Rennes and the Brittany-based club agreed to let him go.
Head coach Bruno Genesio paid tribute to Meling, who came on a substitute this Sunday for one final appearance at the Roazhon Park during Rennes’ 5-1 thrashing of FC Metz. “Biggy was a player I was lucky to coach“, Genesio lauded in his post-game press conference attended by Get French Football News. “It’s rare to have players as reliable as him, on and off the pitch. He may never complete a 10/10 game, but he will never have a 2 or a 3/10 game. He’s a manager’s dream.“
After the game, Meling flew from Rennes to Denmark to seal his move to FC Copenhagen. He will wear the #24 shirt with the Superligaen side.
