France international midfielder Steven Nzonzi (34) is now a free agent following the expiry of his two-year contract with Qatari side Al-Rayyan, the club has announced.
The 2018 World Cup winner with France joined Al-Rayyan in 2021 after his contract with AS Roma had been terminated after Portuguese coach José Mourinho informed the Frenchman he wouldn’t be relying on him. Nzonzi registered two goals and as many assists in 39 games played over two seasons, during which Al-Rayyan finished only eighth and ninth.
Now a free agent, Nzonzi is reportedly not entertaining the prospect of hanging up his boots. L’Equipe understands that Nzonzi’s vast experience could attract interest from France. Nzonzi’s last spell in France was at Stade Rennais, where he had spent the 2020-2021 season on loan from AS Roma. The 2016 Europa League winner with Sevilla is a 20-time France international. His last cap with Les Bleus came in November 2020 during a Nations League group stage 4-2 win against Sweden.
