Union Berlin have announced that they have parted ways with head coach Bo Svensson and his entire coaching staff with immediate effect.

Heading into the winter break, Union find themselves 12th in the Bundesliga and on 17 points however, they also find themselves out of the DFB Pokal after a 2-0 loss to 3.Liga side Arminia Bielefeld and are winless in nine games in all competitions.

Union had started the season strongly after the Dane joined them in the summer, but since the end of October, they have hit a wall. Managing director Horst Heldt explained why a parting of ways was necessary:

“After a thorough analysis of the season so far, we are convinced that a significant change is necessary to reverse the trend. We have therefore decided not to continue our collaboration with Bo Svensson, Babak Keyhanfar, Kristoffer Wichmann and Tijan Njie.”

Union will now look for Svensson’s replacement over the coming days and kicker reports that the solution will be a permanent one and will also be an external hire.

The Köpenick side returns to training in the new year, before facing Heidenheim and Augsburg in a double header when the Bundesliga resumes.
