Union Berlin have today confirmed the signing of Jérôme Roussillon on a permanent deal from Wolfsburg, the fee and the length of the contract are currently unknown.

Swapping Wolfsburg for Berlin, Roussillon said: “After four and a half years in Wolfsburg, I am now looking forward to a new challenge. I have already experienced the stadium and the Union fans a few times and I am really looking forward to it. I want to get the most out of myself here in order to deliver the best possible performance at Union and be successful with the team.”

Union’s director of football Oliver Ruhnert spoke on the move as well, saying: “With Jérôme, we not only add more width in the squad, but also high quality width. In the second half of the season, with the chance of playing up to 32 games on the national and international stage, this quality across the board is essential. That’s why we are even happier that we were able to sign Jérôme in the winter.”

The 30-year-old joined Wolfsburg in 2018 from Montpellier in France and went on to make 128 appearances for VfL, scoring five goals in the process. This season he had been demoted to the bench and had been playing bit-part roles for Wolfsburg having lost his place to Paulo Otávio and Micky van de Ven.

Roussillon adds depth to left-back for Union after they let Tymoteusz Puchacz join Panathinaikos on loan at the beginning of the window, whilst the future of Julian Ryerson remains in doubt.

After a very strong start to the season, Union didn’t win in their final three games before the World Cup break which saw them slip from first to fifth in the Bundesliga. They restart their season against Hoffenheim on January 21.
