OGC Nice’s exit from the UEFA Europa League has been confirmed after a 1-0 defeat to IF Elfsborg in Sweden on Thursday night.
Nice had looked on course for an early exit from the competition having so far failed to win in this year’s edition of the competition. However, with two games remaining and with Le Gym in good form domestically, their hopes of qualification remained alive.
There was an air of resignation to Nice’s line-up. Hicham Boudaoui, Tanguy Ndombélé and Gaëtan Laborde were all left back on the Côte d’Azur, seemingly rested, whilst it was Maxime Dupé, rather than Marcin Bulka started in goal.
Dupé was beaten by Gustav Henriksson midway through the second half. Whilst Les Aiglons pushed to get back in the game and keep their slender 2% chances of qualification alive, they could not find an equaliser or a winner. They therefore exit the competition with one round to spare having accumulated just two points. They sit second bottom of the standings.
