Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has branded his teammate Marcus Rashford as one of the best players in the world, following his fantastic strike against Southampton.

United convincingly beat the Saints 3-0 at St Mary’s with Matthijs de Ligt, Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho finding the back of the net.

Rashford’s strike in particular was a thing of beauty. The winger received a pass from Amad Diallo before brilliantly curling it into the bottom corner with his right foot.

It was Rashford’s first goal since March.

After the final whistle, Onana spoke to TNT Sports (via The Express) and had his say on his side’s performance.

Onana himself made a significant contribution, saving a penalty kick from Cameron Archer with the game goalless. It was after this crucial moment that United sparked into life.

The Cameroonian said, “(Rashford) had a tough season last year. He was not on his best, but today he showed he’s one of the best in the world. But that’s football, that’s life, sometimes you struggle and face difficulties. But it’s not how you fall it’s how many times you stand up.”

“And today he’s come back again and scored a great goal, an important goal for us.”

“Hopefully he’ll score more for us and I’m really happy for him. He needed a goal and hopefully he’ll score more.”

United saw Noussair Mazraoui and Harry Maguire hobble off with injuries. Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt always seemed to have picked up issues, although De Ligt later confirmed that his was just a touch of cramp.

Onana said about this, “It’s not always easy when we change the back-four but sometimes we have to be pragmatic.”

“We can’t control injuries and other things, so we have to deal with the situation. If Casemiro has to play centre-back, I will have to deal with the situation.”

“Sometimes we have games where Bruno (Fernandes) is centre-back and he’s not the best there (laughs), it’s what the team needs at that time and we do our best.”

He expressed his hope that United will have fewer injuries this term.
