Manchester United are gearing up for the Europa League final on Wednesday, and Casemiro is expected to play a crucial role if the Red Devils are to lift the trophy.

It seemed the Brazilian already had one foot outside the door, especially when he was an unused substitute in nine of Ruben Amorim’s first 13 matches in charge.

Before that, Erik ten Hag had also lost confidence in the Brazil international and even chose to promote Toby Collyer ahead of him.

But the former Real Madrid superstar fought his way back, working hard in the gym to improve physically, and subsequently grabbing his chance when the opportunity presented itself.

Casemiro delighted with resurgence

And his professionalism both on and off the pitch has won Amorim over and the head coach is even ready to go to war with INEOS to keep a hold of the midfield dynamo.

And while the 33-year-old has won five Champions League titles during his time in Spain, he feels this season is one of his best considering the circumstances he has had to overcome.

“This was one of the seasons I think I feel most proud of myself,” Casemiro told ESPN Brasil. “It’s been a long time since I’ve been through a moment like this, where the coach doesn’t count on you, but you keep working, keep doing things well.”

“Of course, you want to win titles, but one of the most successful seasons of my career, without a doubt, was this one. For turning things around, with hard work and dedication,” he added.

And while many have tried to play down United’s unbeaten run to the Europa League final, Casemiro feels the Red Devils have earned the right to play in Bilbao. But he expressed his disappointment with the club’s league form.

“We have to be honest, the season wasn’t good, but it’s a plus, it’s something extra. Without a doubt, it’s a golden opportunity. If you win, you play in the Champions League next year.

Special final for Casemiro

“But, I say again, it’s an opportunity to bring joy to ourselves, joy to the fans, to the club. But we need more, we need to do more, win more games […] when it comes to Manchester United, without a doubt you need more” he added.

And despite playing in so many finals before, he feels this is one of the most important in his illustrious career.

“Well, I always say that all games, especially finals, are special. I think this is another important final in my career. Without a doubt, playing in a Europa League final with Manchester United at this time, especially with the season we’ve had, with the ups and downs of the team, the transition, the change of coach, it’s definitely a privilege.

“I think, as I like to say, it’s going to be difficult, but for us it’s a privilege to have the opportunity to play in a Europa League final.”
