Chelsea fans are starting to get really impatient with this January transfer window. The team are in their worst run of form of the season and clearly need a boost, but so far there’s been no game changing transfers in, just a bit of shuffling around of assets on loan.
Almost as though to rub salt in the wound, their sister club, on the other hand, are making moves. David Ornstein has just confirmed that Strasbourg have agreed to sign Samuel Amo-Ameyaw from Southampton.
The 18 year old has agreed personal terms to move before the deadline, and will move on loan with an obligation to buy for €7m in the summer, when he will sign a long term deal. his medical has been done, and BlueCo are now ready to complete what Ornstein calls an “impressive addition.”
The young winger has England caps from U16 up to U19 level, where he plays with some emerging Premier League stars like Mikey Moore and Tyler Dibling. A native Londoner, he started his career in the Tottenham academy before moving to Southampton in 2022 for an easier pathway to first team action.
He got what was promised – he’s made 12 first team appearances for the Saints and even scored a League Cup goal earlier this season.

Of course we don’t know whether the plan is to eventually bring Amo-Ameyaw to Chelsea eventually, but that’s always going to be on the cards if he reaches his potential as a truly top player. In the short term, Strasbourg are really building an interesting team with a lot of young talent, and backing from BlueCo is allowing them to make really impressive moves like this which help them skip the queue when competing with other clubs trying a similar model.
We’ll be keeping a close eye on Sam this season and beyond.
