Overhyped Gerrard is a busted flush as a manager

Steven Gerrard’s attempts to justify his move to the Saudi Pro League (SPL) in 2023 were laughable.

‘I know why I am here – I am here for football reasons.’ Absolutely nothing to do with the £15 million annual salary, honest guv.

Fast forward 18 months and Gerrard has left his role as manager of Al-Ettifaq by ‘mutual consent’.

Absolutely nothing to do with winning 23 out of 59 matches in charge, honest guv.

‘Future England manager’ is finished

Gerrard has inevitably spouted plenty of corporate waffle about his time in the SPL, but let’s cut to the chase – he failed miserably.

The former Liverpool midfielder was overhyped as a player, and things have continued in the same vein since he joined the managerial ranks.

He spent just over three years with Rangers and delivered one trophy. Given he only had Celtic to beat, that was a lousy record.

Aston Villa hadn’t read the memo and decided he was the right man to replace Dean Smith. A record of 13 wins in 40 games shattered their illusions.

Unsurprisingly, Gerrard has now bombed in Saudi Arabia. People who touted him as a ‘future England manager’ should hang their heads in shame.

Gerrard isn’t cut out to be a manager. Any club which thinks otherwise deserves to fail.
