Wrexham director Humphrey Ker has told Paul Mullin that he is still has a future at the club, but his struggles have been apparent this season.
Joe Jacobson has questioned Wrexham AFC director, Humphrey Ker, after he stated that Paul Mullin still has a "huge future" at the Stōk Cae Ras, despite the striker's importance at the club shrinking this season.
Ker made the claim on the Fearless in Devotion podcast, and explained that a good pre-season could easily see the 30-year-old play a role in the 2025/26 campaign, whether that is in the Championship or League One.
However, this year has been a struggle for the Red Dragons' number 10, and he has been forced to come off the bench for the majority of his appearances in the third tier, and he is now facing a spell in the treatment room after suffering a shin injury.
Wrexham are not showing signs of missing their once prolific talisman, and instead they have found new stars to score the goals that they need to guide themselves to a third successive promotion, having played their football in the National League just two years ago.
Mullin was forced to wait to make his return to League One after going through back surgery in the summer to help correct a hamstring issue that had been plaguing him. However, he has not looked the same player since before then, and questions must be asked about his role in Phil Parkinson's side in the future.
The additions of Jay Rodriguez and Sam Smith in the January transfer window is further proof that the Red Dragons are looking to move on from the team that saw them move out of non-league and into the EFL, and the ex-Cambridge United man may just be the victim of his own success.
Speaking exclusively to Football League World, former Wycombe Wanderers star, Joe Jacobson, has queried Mullin's future at Wrexham and believes that the correct decision is to let him go at the end of the campaign.
He told FLW: "Paul Mullin's an interesting one because, before he went to Wrexham, he'd never really done it at League One level. He obviously had a good time at Cambridge United and scored a lot of goals in League Two, but not in League One.
"He had spells at Tranmere Rovers and Swindon Town before that as well but he was never prolific.
"So, when he went to Wrexham and scored all these goals in the National League and in League Two, you expected him to then take that into League One. But he has not played as many games as he'd like to and he's not scored as many goals.
"They've gone and signed Sam Smith, Jay Rodriguez and Jack Marriott, players that are similar to him, but are just of a better stature and better quality and I think that's what happens in football."
Jacobson continued: "Teams just move on, players move on. People jumped on the Wrexham bandwagon a few years ago in the National League and he was one of those players, like Elliot Lee, who dropped down and probably shouldn't have done. They were better than the level.
"But you understand why they did it. They moved out the players that were there and, all of a sudden, they're at the top end of League One and there are players moving those guys out.
"So, I don't necessarily think he needs to be there, because if they go to the Championship, then they'll sign again. They'll go big again and he's already fifth choice at best at the minute and if they sign more, then that's only going to go down.
"For his own sake, does he want to stay at a club where he is not really playing very much?"
Mullin has been a key part of Wrexham's rise up the leagues, but with the difficulties that he has had in front of goal this season, as well as his fitness issues, surely now is the correct time for both parties to part ways.
As Jacobson said, the 30-year-old's record in League One is poor - having scored just six goals in 46 matches in the division in his career.
In comparison, he is extremely prolific and profitable in League Two, finding the back of the net 93 times in 274 appearances and dropping back down to the fourth tier could be the perfect way for Mullin to reignite his career next season.
Nevertheless, it cannot be understated just how vital he has been to Wrexham's success in recent years and finding him the perfect new home should be at the top of the Red Dragons' priorities in the summer.
